The yogi in the gold coast words

Currently the Gold Coast is a breeding ground for yoga studios, yogi’s are everywhere and I absolutely love it! On the Gold Coast it is completely acceptable to wear yoga pants in any situation or for any occasion and no one would batter an eye lid, probably the reason I lived here for so long. This wonderful and wacky city is fully integrating yoga into it’s everyday life, it is the birth place for many yoga wear companies such as Loz n Poz, Flow Yoga Wear and Yogiic, every week hundreds of people attend community classes organised by the city council, even the cafes on the GC reflect what yogi’s want to eat and drink. Any yogi travelling here will be delighted with the choices in styles on the Gold Coast, from Ashtanga, Acro-yoga, ariel yoga, stand up paddle board yoga, Vinyasa, Hatha and so much more. With many studios to choose from I have narrowed it down to 5 luminous, authentic and welcoming studios that cover all ends of the Gold Coast.

Essence of Living – Peerless Avenue, Mermaid Beach 4218

This place is extremely close to my heart as this is where I trained to be a yoga teacher under the guidance of the beautiful Michelle Merrifield. This divine space is oozing with love, connection and intention. The studio is home to some of the best yoga teachers in Australia including my favourite, Clare Merrifield (Michelle’s divine sister), try and catch one of her awe-inspiring 1.5 hour classes, you will not be disappointed. Essence of Living offers world class yoga teacher trainings and has hosted some big yogi names including Patrick Beach, Simon Borg-Olivier and Jonah Kest. If you are heading to the Coast you cannot miss out on a love filled class with one of the ‘Essence Angels’, the girls are experts at accomodating beginners and advanced students alike. The studios homely feel will relax you the moment you step foot in the door and you are guaranteed to leave feeling inspired, blissed out and maybe a little sore if you catch one of Clare’s or Michelle’s energetic classes!

The Floating Lotus Studio – Siganto Drive, Helensvale 4212

This little slice of Paradise is run by the inspiring Sharee Sanderson, with 2 businesses, 3 kids, a hubby and a new puppy this women is the modern day Super Women! The Floating Lotus became my second home whilst on the Gold Coast, the community here are next to none, supportive, loving and inviting (to say the least). Classes are dynamic, fun and nurturing. If you’re not in the yoga mood, you have to catch one of Sharee’s butt burning, leg shaking, core cramping pilates classes! Like Sharee doesn’t do enough already, she also runs Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) Yoga classes on the Coast during summer and spring. SUP yoga is so much fun and a very unique experience, it certainly tests your balancing skills (be prepared to get wet!).

Zen Soul Life – Paradise Point

Madonna Williams has lead yoga classes in Paradise Point for over 10 years and she is hands down one of the most authentic people I have ever met. Madonna’s classes are over flowing with wisdom, passion and zen, with a strong emphasis on yoga principles and philosophy. Not only does this yogi teach beautiful classes she is also trained in Zen Thai Shiatsu and I can personally testify that she gives a sublime massage! Madonna runs her delicious classes in a variety of locations including an intimate studio and the Paradise Point Community Hall. This year Madonna is running her first Yoga Teaching Training course and I have no doubt that it will be beyond spectacular.

Ritual Yoga and Pilates – Palm Beach Avenue, Palm Beach 4221

Ritual is run by two bubbly, bright sisters. Rose and Sophie are incredibly welcoming and their studio is like something out of a style magazine! The girls work hard offering over 40 classes a week, so no matter the time of day you will find something going on here. This is a relatively new studio on the Coast, yet it has received sensational support and interest from the local community and businesses, including a feature with Lululemon. What I love most is Rose and Sophie are all about giving back, they choose a different charity each quarter to donate a percentage of their profits, angels aren’t they!

The Gold Coast Yoga Centre – Palm Beach

The home of the Gold Coast’s yoga teacher’s teachers. The Gold Coast Yoga Centre opened in 1996 and have a dedicated teaching team with over 60 years of collective teaching experience, this timeless and authentic centre is certainly the place to take your practice to the next level. With Mysore, Ashtanga Led and Vinyasa classes available this is the perfect spot for dedicated Ashtangi’s and determined yogi’s. The centre offers workshops, retreats, Kirtan concerts and so much more. For those who wish to be guided and grow under the influence of such knowledgeable teachers but don’t feel ready for the more advanced classes, the centre also hold classes for beginners.

No matter which yoga studio you choose to attend on the Gold Coast, guaranteed you will meet some beautiful people and have a good practice. So go put your yoga pants on, grab an acai bowl, sip on a green smoothie and get your OM on!
